Songwriters seem to flourish on the fertile Oklahoma plains. Woody Guthrie, Roger Miller, Leon Russell, J.J. Cale and Jimmy Webb. Add Verlon Thompson to that list. Thirty years as a professional songwriter and traveling troubadour serve as credentials. As a solo performer and as the trusted sidekick of Texas Americana songwriting icon Guy Clark, Verlon has viewed the world from stages everywhere from Barcelona to Binger (his hometown in Oklahoma).

Live from the Divide - Paul Thorn

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 59:48

Singer-songwriter Paul Thorn mixes his signature sounds of blues and rock in a solo acoustic performance at Live From The Divide.

Paul_thorn_2_small Paul Thorn has been pleasing crowds for years with his muscular brand of roots music - bluesy, rocking and thoroughly Southern, yet also speaking universal truths. The Tupelo, Mississippi native worked in a furniture factory, jumped out of airplanes, and was a professional boxer before sharing his experiences with the world as a singer-songwriter. With his father being a Church of God Pentecostal Minister and his uncle (his father's brother) having spent time as a pimp, Thorn has plenty of material to mine from - and expertly turns these "saint and sinner" scenarios into songwriter gold.

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians. With a professional career spanning five decades, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. His unusual talent and life are common lore in Australia:  born into a musical family, Tommy got his first guitar at age 4 and was taught by his mother. He quickly learned by ear, with no formal instruction, and has never read music. By age 6 he was working as a professional musician in the family band.  By the age of 10, young Tommy had already played his way across Australia.

Honored by Chet Atkins with the rare title of “Certified Guitar Player” for his contribution to guitar music, Tommy Emmanuel’s message is just pure love for the music and his delight in sharing it with the world, one audience at a time

Live from the Divide - Hayes Carll

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 58:53

Hayes Carll brings his maverick country-folk style of songwriting to the Live From The Divide stage.

Hayes-carll1_small Hayes Carll is an odd mix.  Wildly literate, utterly slackerly, impossibly romantic, absolutely a slave to the music, the 35-year old Texan is completely committed to the truth and unafraid to skewer pomposity, hypocrisy and small-minded thinking. Like so many Texans before him, there’s no agony in the ecstasy – just the wonder of capturing the perfect character in song.

Live from the Divide - Radney Foster

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:00:27

Radney Foster brings his band to the Live from the Divide stage in Bozeman, Montana.

Radney_foster240_small

Foster began his solo career in 1992 and his album Del Rio, TX 1959 produced four consecutive Top 40 hits. However, his commercial success waned with the release subsequent albums such as Labor of Love (1995), See What You Want to See (1999), Are You Ready for the Big Show?, Another Way to Go (2002) and This World We Live In (2006). Overall, Foster has had thirteen songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including the Top Ten hits "Just Call Me Lonesome" (#10, 1992) and "Nobody Wins" (#2, 1993). Live from the Divide - Houston Marchman

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 53:58

Houston Marchman brings his Texas blend--country, folk and blues, spiced with polka and conjunto--to the Live from the Divide stage in Bozeman, Montana.

Marchman240_small

The driving force behind Houston Marchman is his ability to translate real life into music. Having spent his formative years soaking up the sights and sounds of America’s heartland, Marchman received his first guitar at the age of 5 and was influenced by his musical grandfather and poetic grandmother Today he continues to produce music both poetically humble and musically complex, creating music that honestly and vividly portrays life mixing the sounds of country, Texas folk, polka, conjunto and blues.

Described as a charming and passionate person, Marchman is filled with humorous accounts and boundless energy. He connects with audiences wherever he plays. His fans love the honesty of his music as well as his smoky character-filled voice. Marchman explains his philosophy of writing this way: "The point is not to be creative but to be accurate in your experience and therefore you will be creative. Don't write what you think listeners want to hear, write what you know."

Live from the Divide - Chris Knight - EP 620

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 59:32

With Chris Knight's Music , critics of the new country sound of the late '90s began to hold out hope that Nashville could return to the genuineness that it had been so lacking for years. That hope was rooted partly in Knight's singing, full of country-rock phrasing clearly modeled after Knight's hero, Like Steve Earle, but even more so in Knight's songwriting. His flair for describing the lower-middle class in Middle America, their difficulties making a living, and run-ins with the law, evokes Earle and even early Bruce Springsteen. recording for a major label was a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it gave Knight a chance to be a major force in starting a new trend in country music all the while keeping his independence and following the classic country troubadour life

Live from the Divide - Joe Pug - EP 619

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:01:38

Joe Pug - A singer/songwriter whose songs offer an updated version of the country-folk archetypes that Bob Dylan and John Prine made famous, Joe Pug was born and raised in Maryland, and began playing guitar when he was in grade school. Pug formed his first band on a dare from his sixth-grade science teacher, who didn't believe Pug and his friends would be able to pull something together in time to appear at a school dance. After graduating from high school, he traveled south to North Carolina to attend college. Pug was studying writing plays, but in time his growing passion for songwriting overwhelmed his interest in drama. Pug dropped out of school and relocated to Chicago, where he wrote songs and began working his way into the city's club circuit. He released his debut EP on his own label in 2008.
"I had been in a bit of a songwriting rut, just sitting in my house with the guitar in my hands playing the same chords over and over," Pug says. "To wake myself up, I went out and got one of those 'free-if-you-move-it' Craigslist pianos. When I got it back to my place, I sat down and a New song‘ just kind of flowed out. A week later, I hired a piano tuner and he just laughed when he played the first note. It was so out of tune, that it was a half-step flat. The demo I recorded was in B flat, but I thought it was in B."it showcases the singer's unique and achingly honest point of view that spins lyrics into folk poetry. Once in a while, you have to be a little out of tune to find your way. This was the case for folk troubadour Joe Pug toiling away in a quest to create the songs

Bonnie Bishop:
After a long career of touring and performing bar gigs, Bishop took a break back home in Texas. Live from the Divide - Martha Scanlan

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 58:06

Martha Scanlan returns to the Live from the Divide stage with songs drawn from the Montana landscape.

Martha1_240_small

Martha Scanlan writes songs about belonging and place. It comes out of her recent relative hiatus from the road, where she has been immersed in living and working on a hundred year-old ranch in the southeast corner of Montana...

Martha takes the listeners deep into the heart of the landscape itself; the meadows and cottonwood groves and decades-old cabin - born out of a landscape where arrowheads lie next to fossils next to hundred-year-old cedar fence posts alongside tracks of horses set rock solid in the mud from the last good rain. Stories inside of stories inside of stories...

Live from the Divide - Jack Ingram - EP 606

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 59:33

Jack Ingram was born in Houston, Texas. He started writing songs and performing while studying psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas,
Jack Ingram began his music career singing at a privately owned bar near the TCU campus of Fort Worth, Later, during the early 1990s, Jack toured the state of Texas opening for Mark Chesnutt and other acts. His first release was his self-titled album in 1995 with an appearance on Austin city limits-,
When Jack Ingram won the 2008 Academy of Country Music award for “Best New Male Vocalist,” thousands of people in the audience had to be smiling to themselves about that whole “new” thing. They knew the thirty-something, steel-eyed veteran accepting that trophy on that stage in Vegas had been rocking roadhouses, theaters and stadiums relentlessly since 1997, that he’d been celebrated by critics and fans of hard-core country music for more than a decade, and that as a Texas-born songwriter and performer, he’d been on the short list of next generation artists who could fill the boots of Lone Star legends like Willie and Waylon and the boys.

Live from the Divide - Bj Barham -EP 605

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:00:11

Fans of Live from the divide know Bj Barham as the lead vocalist of American Aquarium, a country rock band out of Raleigh, North Carolina, where Barham went to school. He still is the vocalist, and the band is still together, but after the Paris shootings in November of 2016, Barham found himself with an eight-song solo record and a desire to tell a wholly different story: his own.
Rockingham is storytelling at its finest. He writes songs about the hardships people face and the fake hope you’re served when you grow up in a small American town where people die in the same place they’re born. In those towns there’s no real sense of a future—or if there is, it rarely delivers. While the narratives on Rockingham hide behind the characters Barham created, every song comes directly from personal experience. What Bj barham created and his performances and recordings is a haunting, beautiful ode to the everyday man, the woman who loves him, and the power of love in a small town.We were honored and lucky enough to Capture BJ Barham on the “lower 48 tour” supporting is Solo endeavor Rockingham

Live from the Divide -Ned LeDoux - EP 604

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:01:11

In country music, a last name like LeDoux casts a big, storied and bittersweet shadow, but it’s one Ned LeDoux doesn’t mind standing in one bit. Having been a drummer in his dad Chris’ band Western Underground since 1998, Ned knew from an early age that he had “no plan b” but to play music, “Once I got the taste of the road, and being in front of a crowd and just the sound of it, it was...freedom.”
Ned has boxes of song ideas his dad never finished and is digging through those for inspiration, “I will kind of stick with what dad used to do but bring my own stuff to the table.”
Ned says he doesn’t even need a road map anymore–that he and the highway are like brothers. He wants to write songs about what he knows, keep the themes simple and harken back to the sound of good ole country music but with an edge. Keeping up the family tradition of hard work & pursuit of craft - ned Ledoux is forging his own unique signature both as a performer and a songwriter and all the while throwing in a few of his dad’s songs in his own style as a tribute.

Live from the Divide - Walt Wilkins - EP 618

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:00:00

This week A very special episode celebrating Songwriter, performer, and music producer Walt Wilkins
San Antonio-born Walt Wilkins has been called a genius, more than once, and a writer the caliber of John Steinbeck and his voice as comfortable as a pair of old blue jeans, His crafting of story-songs, hard-edged vocals to sing them and a plaintive guitar have made him a fixture of the Texas music scene (and Nashville before that).
Walt Wilkins is one of those artists who can only be fully understood through a grasp of his entire body of work, which is substantial. He emerges as a man of wisdom, a beacon for the rest of us, maybe even a healer.
As a music producer Walt Wilkins has shared his hard earned wisdom and Craft on many recordings by new and veteran artists .... too many to count.
Ladies and gentlemen we are proud to present the 300th recorded episode of Live from the divide featuring the amazing Walt Wilkins

Live from the Divide -Ray Bonneville- EP 637

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 01:01:39

Ray Bonneville is a Canadian traveling blues singer, musician, and songwriter. Born in Canada, and raised in the United States, Bonneville is a blues-influenced, song and groove man who is strongly influenced by New Orleans Music and culture
Every now and then, you run across someone with a library’s worth of stories to tell. But unlike the raconteurs who regale friends with well-embellished versions of their exploits, these storytellers have lived so much, they reveal chapters of their hard-won wisdom slowly, carefully, like layers peeled from an onion.
Ray Bonneville didn’t even open his storybook until his early 40s, some 20 years after he started performing. But with a style that sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois, this blues-influenced, New Orleans-inspired “song and groove man,” as he’s been so aptly described, luckily found his rightful calling.

Live from the Divide -Jack Klatt - EP 641

From Live From The Divide | Part of the Live From the Divide series | 59:21

The music Jack Klatt makes often summons memories of earlier times, evoking old-time blues artists, Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and country artists of the 1940s and ’50s, and even some earlier roots music. The fingerpicking guitarist, Singer songwriter recently dredged up some memories of his own earlier music career, which started just a decade ago.
“I took a lot of weird gambles without really knowing what’s at the end of the road,” he said. “The funny thing is, 10 years later, I still don’t know what’s at the end of the road. That’s life, I guess.”

Live from the Divide - Robbie Fulks - EP 714

From Live From The Divide | Part of the LFTD Season 7 series | 01:01:16

Robbie Fulks was born in York, Pennsylvania, and grew up in a half-dozen small towns in southeast Pennsylvania, the North Carolina Piedmont, and the Blue Ridge area of Virginia. He learned guitar from his dad, banjo from Earl Scruggs and John Hartford records, and fiddle (long since laid down in disgrace) on his own. He attended Columbia College in New York City in 1980 and dropped out in 1982 to focus on the Greenwich Village songwriter scene and other ill-advised pursuits.
In the mid-1980s he moved to Chicago and joined Greg Cahill’s Special Consensus Bluegrass Band, with whom he made one record (Hole in My Heart, Turquoise, 1989) and toured constantly. Since then he has gone on to create a multifarious career in music.. He tours yearlong with various configurations and plays a weekly residency at the Hideout in Chicago.
His 11th record, Gone Away Backward, returned him to his bluegrass days and extends the boundaries of that tradition with old-time rambles and sparely orchestrated, acoustic reflections on love, the country life, the slings of time, and the struggles of common people..

He has also found time to put pen to paper and is increasingly known for his impressive songwriting and powerful voice., he has completed his bona fides as both a master instrumentalist and an important songwriter and singer.. Live from the Divide - Colter Wall - EP 708

From Live From The Divide | Part of the LFTD Season 7 series | 57:36

Colter Wall - Wall first picked up the guitar when he was 12 years old, and by the time he was 13, he'd decided he wanted to make music his career. Initially, he played in local rock bands, but as he dug deeper into rock history, he developed an interest in the gritty, traditional sounds of blues and Appalachian country, and his ambitions moved from playing lead guitar to songwriting. In time, Wall shifted from playing with a rock band to solo gigs focusing on his country-accented material, and he struck up a friendship with the members of the Saskatchewan roots music outfit the Dead South, who took him on the road as their opening act. Wall's first full-length album, a self-titled effort, was released in March 2017; produced by Dave Cobb, since then he’s been touring on a thematic collection of originals and a few choice covers honoring his Western Canadian heritage.
