Uppity Women

From Janean Jorgensen | Part of the Broadway Matinee - Songs from the Stage & Screen series | 59:00

Women who like to stir things up aren't always appreciated by society, but they make great stage characters

Facebook_small From the sufferage movement to buring the bras, women have worked hard to be appreciated by society. Some of those women played their part on stage. Being brave and bold, stepping outside the status quo. I’m Janean Jorgensen. Hear songs of great uppity women from Babes in Arms, Company, Hello Dolly, My Fair Lady, and more on the next Broadway Matinee.

640: Five Women, 3/2/2018

From This American Life | Part of the This American Life series | 59:00

A different kind of #MeToo story, about several women who worked for the same man. They tell us not only about their troubling encounters with him, but also about their lives beforehand. Who were they when they entered the workplace, and how did their personal histories shape the way they dealt with his harassment?

“So much of who we are, is where we have been”  —  William Langwiesche

We continue to circle the globe today as we look to the West, to music by women from Europe.  These are relatively new releases, covering a fair range of geography .  Not all of the music is new, but the performances certainly are.  This is music from the women of England, Italy, Germany, and even Latvia and Bulgaria

That is, looking at the Tony Best Musical or Best Revival of a Musical. Starting off with the 1992 Tony for Best Musical, Crazy For You, and moving forward each year to include shows like Kiss of the Spider Woman, and revivals like Annie Get Your Gun and Kiss Me Kate, and on to Hairspray, Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon. Coming full circle to the Best Musical Tony Award for 2016: Hamilton.
This edition of Broadway Bound also promotes the Broadway For Orlando charity recording of What The World Needs Now Is Love. The recording was created three days after the nation's worst mass shootong in Orlando, Florida to send love and hope to a devastated community.
