Following Seas

From Alex Lewis | 08:26

In late 2011. the federal government decided to demolish five old seaside cottages on Cape Cod that were at threat of being washed away due to coastal erosion. This action incited a groundswell among locals who had inhabited the cottages for generations. The tensions between the government and the locals highlighted the affect of a changing physical landscape on a long-established community.

The cottages on Chatham's North Beach represent an old way of life on Cape Cod: rustic and isolated, without electricity or running water. Some of these camps have been with families for generations. But beach erosion and sea level rise are threatening to wash them all away. When the Cape Cod National Seashore decided to demolish five of these old cottages due to the threat of erosion, it incited a groundswell among locals to defend the camps.

This story is about a community in transition due to a fast changing physical landscape. It was produced at the Transom Story Workshop.
