This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! is titled “Bach and Beyond”, and features music inspired or influenced by music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), and interviews with Yale University music professor Benjamin Verdery, and composers Andrew McKenna Lee and Mark Anthony Cruz.

The program begins with a March 2009 interview with guitarist-composer Andrew McKenna Lee, in which he talks about how Bach’s Prelude in d minor for lute, BWV 999, became the inspiration and basis of his own piece, “Five Refractions on a Prelude of Bach.”

In a 1995 interview, guitarist Benjamin Verdery discusses his arrangement of CPE Bach’s Concerto in A major, and relates an account of CPE Bach speaking about his father JS Bach’s organ playing.

The program continues with the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s recording of the Prelude & Fugue #1 from Book I of JS Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. Inspired by Bach’s monumental work of 24 preludes and fugues in each key, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) composed his own set of 24 preludes and fugues for two guitars, and titled it “The Well-Tempered Guitars.” The work was dedicated to the Presti-Lagoya Duo.

Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) combined his love of Bach’s music with a nationalistic style in his nine “Bachianas Brasieiras.” The Prague Guitar Quartet performs their arrangement of #1.

The program concludes with a February 2009 interview with composer-guitarist Mark Anthony Cruz, who discusses his humorous encore piece “Bachlava”, which contains five Bach themes.

This week’s edition of CLASSICAL GUITAR ALIVE! features music from films and an interview with an October 2015 interview with one of Hollywood’s leading composers: guitaris/keyboardist/composer Mark Mancina, who wrote music for films including Twister, Training Day, Bad Boys, Speed, Con Air, Planes, Tarzan, the upcoming Disney animated feature Moana, and produced Elton John’s songs for The Lion King .

The program begins with Sergio Assad’s score for the Japanese film NATSU NO NIWA, or THE SUMMER GARDEN.

In this first interview excerpt, Mark Mancina relates how he started by hustling theme music gigs for local businesses, and landed his first job as a composer was for a VHS video, a hunting instructional video on how to gut a deer(!). His piece “Moll’s Jig” is from the film MOLL FLANDERS.

John Barry’s 14 minute quasi-guitar concerto, “Romance for Guitar & Orchestra”, as an integral part of the 1968 British film DEADFALL. Guitarist Renata Tarrago performs the piece in a concert scene in the film while a burglary takes place. The film cuts back and forth between scenes of the concert and a jewel heist in a race against time.

In the second interview excerpt with Mark Mancina, he describes his big break, and writing cues for film composer Hans Zimmer led to Director Jan de Bont’s invitation to write the score to the blockbuster film SPEED. The program continues with Quali Dance from Mark Mancina’s score to IMAGINE THAT (2009).

The program continues with an excerpt from the 1972 Warner film THE COWBOYS, starring John Wayne. In this campfire scene, a young boy strums music of Vivaldi on his guitar. This arrangement by composer John Williams serves as a dramatic underpinning to a very poignant scene. It also clearly demonstrates the raw emotional power of the guitar and its ability to dramatically impact the mood of a scene.

In the third interview excerpt with Mark Mancina, he relates the life-changing experience of how he came to produce Elton John’s songs for THE LION KING, which led to composing music for the long-running stage musical.

BLACK ORPHEUS (1958) was awarded the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. The film started the Bossa Nova craze in the US with its score by Luiz Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Actor/Director and jazz aficionado Clint Eastwood  composed “Claudia’s Theme” for his 1992 western UNFORGIVEN. Lennie Niehaus orchestrated Eastwood’s theme in his score. This features one of the final performances of guitarist Laurindo Almeida.

Two pieces from the classical guitar repertory, Sor’s Etude 19, and Torroba’s Montemayor, were used in the drama LABOR DAY.

In the fourth and final interview excerpt with Mark Mancina, he illustrates the up/down nature of the film music industry, by relating the stories of how the song Over the Rainbow was initially cut from THE WIZARD OF OZ, and how Bernard Herrmann’s score to 2001 was discarded.

The program concludes with Walk on a Bridge, from Sergio Assad’s score for the Japanese film NATSU NO NIWA, or THE SUMMER GARDEN.

This week’s edition of Classical Guitar Alive! features music from Asia Minor and more, including music from Turkey, Armenia,  Greece and Macedonia.

The program begins with the Greek Dance #1 by Dimitri Fampas (1922-1996), performed by the composer’s daughter, Eva Fampas. Dimitri Fampas was a student of Segovia and Emilio Pujol, Dimitri Fampas enjoyed a long and successful career as performing guitarist and composer.

Carlo Domeniconi’s exotic and hypnotic Turkish-influenced piece  “Koyunbaba” (“Shepherd’) has emerged as one of the most popular solo guitar works of the last 20 years. The piece is heard in an early recording by Chinese prodigy Xuefei Yang.

Commissioned by and dedicated to Bolivian guitarist Javier Calderon in 1978, the “Guitar Concerto No. 1” by Armenian-American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was first premiered in 1979. However, a commercially-available recording of the piece was not issued until 2006 on the Naxos label featuring American guitarist David Leisner and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gerard Schwarz.

Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (b. 1925) is best known for his film scores for “Zorba the Greek”, and “Serpico”, but has also composed symphonic, chamber, and stage works. His cycle of “Epitafios” is a setting of poems in a Greek folk instrument style of poems by Yannis Ritsos (1909-1990).

The program concludes with Scott Tennant performing Miroslav Tadic’s “Walk Dance”. The work is based on a Macedonian dance in 11/8 time: (2+2+3+2+2).
