Jazz & the Civil Rights Movement is a one hour program devoted to seven classic Jazz recordings which focuses on the Civil Rights Movement. The subject matter pays attention to the sit in movement, the National Guard intervention to prevent integration at Little Rock Central High School, the Freedom Riders, the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Alabama, Rosa Parks and the Selma Marches.

The music is performed by Charles Mingus, Max Roach, John Coltrane, Clark Terry, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell and Art Blakey.

This one hour program is divided into three sets with room for the News, PSA's and announcements.

I've Got the Blues and I've Got Soul! The Incredible Jimmy Smith

Jimmy Smith was instrumental in shifting the Hammond organ into the spotlight in the jazz genre and his many Blue Note albums of the 50s and 60s, including The Champ (1956) and The Sermon! (1958) are considered to be classics.

Jimmy Smith was also known as The Incredible Jimmy Smith was a Jazz musician who became popular by playing the Hammond B-3 electric organ. He recorded around 40 albums for Blue Note Records in just eight years beginning in 1956. He switched to Verve Records in 1962 and was accompanied by a big band on many of the sessions. He also recorded with other artists like Michael Jackson on his successful album “Bad”. This program is an introduction to the great Jimmy Smith and gives examples of how his style incorporates the Blues and Soul.

The Jazz Mother of the Piano: Mary Lou Williams

She was called "The First Lady of the Piano", "The First Lady of the Jazz Piano" and "The First Lady of Jazz". She was Mary Lou Williams and was a very unique figure in the history of Jazz.

This program is a limited one hour music program containing a variety of artists. This show contains three segments leaving room for announcements and public service announcements.

Mary Lou Williams was a pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader. She was a child prodigy, and she had her professional debut with big bands at age 12.

Beginning in 1929, she wrote arrangements for many swing bands, including those of Andy Kirk & His Twelve Clouds of Joy and Duke Ellington. Her 12-movement Zodiac Suite was performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1946. She also would work with Dizzy Gillespie and Cecil Taylor over the years. In the 1960s and '70s she composed a number of liturgical pieces for jazz ensembles, including Music for Peace (1970), popularly known as Mary Lou's Mass.

This one hour program highlights the musical history of Mary Lou Williams and is presented in three segments. This is Mary Lou Williams - The First Lady of Jazz Piano.

The history of the musical group, the THREE DEGREES with special guest and long time member Helen Scott. Parts A, B and C are separate hours and can be aired on different days.

The Three Degrees are a female musical trio originally from Philadelphia. They were formed in the early 1960's by record producer Richard Barrett who was responsible for The Chantels, Little Anthony & The Imperials and Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers. Richard Barrett selected four girls from a local high school for his next two new acts. Three of them became the Three Degrees modeled after the Chantels, and the fourth a solo artist who would become interchangeable with the group. Helen Scott was one of the girls chosen by Richard Barrett in the early days. Helen talks about the history of the group from the 1960's to the present. The Group has recorded for record labels like Swan, Roulette, Philadelphia International, Epic and Ariola. Their hits have been Maybe, When Will I See You Again, Dirty Ol’ Man, TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia), Ebb Tide, MacArthur Park plus others.

SEGMENT TWO:   Helen Scott is introduced and she talks about the early days of the Three Degrees in Philadelphia during High School.

SEGMENT THREE:   Helen Scott  of the Three Degrees talks about the days when the group recorded for Swan Records, then Roulette Records, she talked about the band MFSB, former member of the Three Degrees Shelia Ferguson and the 1970 hit "Maybe", including the original version in which she sang lead, plus discussions about appearing on television and performing overseas.

She is know for her recordings Sucker For Your Love, Square Biz, Behind The Groove, Lover Girl, I Need You Loving and Fire and Desiree with Rick James. The interview includes how she came to Motown, her family, working with Rick James, discussing her various albums and recordings, New Orleans, her CD Congo Square  and her daughter Alia Rose.

The program also includes most of her recordings from Motown, Stax, Epic, Cash Money (both studio and live), Rick James, The Mary Janes Girls and Minnie Ripperton.

THE TALKING DRUM, is a program which samples the rhythms of the descendants of African slaves brought to the new world of South America and the Caribbean. This show features studio, live and field recordings of percussionists from Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Peru, Venezuela, Brazil, and Colombia.

We are going across the African Diaspora and sample the drum which came to the new world with enslaved Africans to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, Peru, Brazil, Venezuela and Colombia . This one hour program is an introduction and sample of the rituals and raw drumming from these countries.

The rhythms found here are the foundation of Latin Jazz .

Willie Mae "BIG MAMMA" THORNTON was a Blues singer, musician and songwriter. She had a short life and is best known for the songs "Hound Dog" and "Ball 'n' Chain". The songs were hits for her, but became mega hits later for ELVIS PRESLEY and JANIS JOPLIN. This one hour program is a short look at her musical life story.

Big Mama Thornton (not to be confused with Big Maybelle ) was a unique Blues singer, drummer and harmonica player. She was born in Alabama and left home at age 14 to work on traveling shows and eventually settled in Houston, Texas during the late 1940’s. Her first release and hit was “Hound Dog ” recorded in 1951 at Houston under the leadership of band leader Johnny Otis . Her career would not blossom again until the mid and late 1960’s. She continued to record until the late 1970’s and she died at the age of 57 in 1984.  

This program includes some of the studio records of Big Mama Thornton as well as some of her exciting live performances. Including here is segments from the historic show with the Muddy Waters Blues Band as well as her live performance at the Newport Jazz Festival.
