Since 2009 I have been volunteering my time to help people learn how to use emotional intelligence by hosting my own radio show called "The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel and Control How You Feel." Mostly I take calls for people who need help with emotional challenges typically at work or at home. Some of my shows are devoted to education about emotional intelligence and I have been privileged to interview outstanding leaders in business and in the field of emotional intelligence.

Following is an interview with the pioneering psychologists President Peter Salovey of Yale, Jack Mayer of UNH and their colleague David Caruso. There are also interviews with Dan Goleman and one with Cary Cherniss. For leaders of business and industry there are interviews with John Caparella former President and COO of the Venetian and Palazzo Hotels and Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, former CEO of HCL in India, Vineet Nayaar, and Helen Riess, M.D. who works at Harvard and is Chief Scientist and Chairman of Empathetics. Emotional Intelligence and Leadership: The Pioneering Psychologists

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 54:01

Ever wonder why some leaders appear unwilling to pay attention to others' feelings? Ever wonder why a particular person really upsets you and you can't seem to control how you feel when you are around them? Listen to this interview to find out how to influence others and how to manage your own emotions more effectively.

Logo_for_web_small Peter Salovey, Provost at Yale University and Jack Mayer, Psychologist at University of New Hampshire were the first to research and write about a new intelligence they called "emotional intelligence". Dan Goleman published a best seller called Emotional Intelligence in 1995. Since that time many programs and models of emotional intelligence have emerged. David Caruso, a psychologist, consultant, and research affiliate at Yale, joined with Peter and Jack to create the Mayer Salovey Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) which is an ability based model of emotional intelligence. Chuck Wolfe joined with Peter, Jack, and David to publish an earlier version of the MSCEIT, and to help find ways to make the knowledge of emotional science highly useful to people in the workplace, and in life in general. The Emotion Roadmap was a key outcome of the work we all did together.  In this interview you will hear: why this truly is a new intelligence; how emotional abilities are measured; why the differences in our individual abilities matter; and how to improve your emotional abilities. Can you imagine having more control over how you feel and how others are feeling? How about learning how to lead and becoming an inspirational leader? While this interview will not solve all your emotional challenges, it will provide you with tools, and insights, to help you plan emotionally for better outcomes!

In my management consulting practice I have found organizations often have similar challenges, such as changing a culture, engaging employees, managing talent, developing new leaders, creating new growth, and managing expenses, while at the same time exceeding customer expectations.

I prepared a series of questions that address these types of challenges and shared them with John Caparella. His experience, knowledge and intuition have led people to view him as a very practical, emotionally intelligent leader.
I am sure you will find John's answers to be brilliant and engaging, and the information discussed very meaningful and valuable.

Emotions Role in Successful Change 7 14 21

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 41:15

Organizational and individual change efforts often struggle to succeed. In this show I focus on a real case study involving the key role emotions play in a successful change effort I led in the hospitality and convention center business. The information shared will benefit any and all leaders who wish to engage in successful change.

Road_for_change_small Key factors leading to success include a clear and compelling vision of what the future will be when the change succeeds; a series of clear, concrete first steps; significant pressure to leave behind the status quo or current state of affairs; and focused attention on the role of emotions of those leading the change and those impacted by the change. My experience as a counselor and family therapist and as a leading expert in change management and emotional intelligence provide a unique background and understanding for how individual and organizations behave when they attempt to change.

A number of people emailed me to say how much they valued the show so I decided to post it. Listen and share with everyone you care about.

Performance Evaluations are Better when We Use the Emotion Roadmap

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 54:01

Worried about an upcoming conversation about your performance? Are you a leader who has a number of performance evaluation discussions in the next few months? Over the years I have helped countless leaders improve how they handle conversations about performance.

Chuck_in_orlando_png3_small  If you want to have better, more effective discussions listen for tips on how to use emotional intelligence. In this radio show I incorporate the idea that performance discussions have three parts. These include a beginning where you set the tone, a middle where you discuss what is working well and what may need to change, and at the end when you end the discussion. How you want to feel at each step of the way is really important to consider. You can actually plan emotionally how you and the other person feel throughout the discussion. I tell you how in this radio show.

Gift of Emotionally Intelligent Performance Discussions

From Chuck Wolfe | Part of the The Emotion Roadmap: Take the Wheel & Control How You Feel series | 16:40

Towards the end of each year people begin preparing for annual performance discussions. In my experience, using emotional intelligence to guide the giver and receiver of feedback for planning how they each want to feel themselves, and how they want each other to feel, leads to much more satisfactory discussions. Listen and learn how to emotionally plan the beginning, middle, and end of these discussions.

Charles_j I view feedback discussions as having a beginning, a middle and an end. The beginning is setting the tone and getting each person to feel open, engaged, and supported. In the middle heightened alertness is important to focus on how each party is hearing each other. For the leader, is the person being reviewed hearing this in the way I intend it to be heard? For the person being reviewed, am I demonstrating openness and receptivity and minimizing any defensiveness, while still being able to offer differing points of view when I disagree. For both, at the end do we feel appreciated, valued, supported and cared about.
