Please see a recommendation for this piece and another program from "The Score" series in the Music Station Picks for April, '10 playlist: http://www.prx.org/playlists.
A shining musical and historical program and context for celebrating and honoring those who have served. Wide variety of music (Glen, Miller, Sinatra, Bette Midler, Steppenwolf, Tobey Keith, Michael Jackson).
Please see the entire music playlist on the piece page to ensure the wide variety of music fits your station's special programming music guidelines.)
A clearly organized review of the America-at-War time-line all assembled, hosted and produced by the master radio production veteran, Charlie Warren.
This is an important, loving and thorough tribute to the late musician-conductor, Erich Kunzel -- best known for conducting the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and for leading the National Symphony Orchestra on the nationally televised PBS July 4th and Memorial Day concerts in Washington DC.
Host/Producer Naomi Lewin, and dozens of EK's colleagues and admirers (Dave Brubeck, Doc Sevrinsen, Frederica von Stade and Cincinnati Pops players) share the stories, insight and moments that all added up to a spectacular person, career and musical legacy.
Music is varied and well chosen (especially Cab Calloway-Porgy and Bess and Rodgers "Victory at Sea"); the script is pristine, thoughtful and upbeat. Overall production, mix and assembly is superb; music-to-talk ratio is perfect. Promo included.
"The Spectacular Legacy of Erich Kunzel" brings forward the conductor's life, musical gifts and the twinkle that was always in his eye.
Perhaps a model you can use at your station to introduce or reintroduce the value and strength of the audio post card -- content, mix, production, flow -- it's all there.
More importantly, for listeners -- this should provide a real joy, boost and kick. And look forward to the twist at about 2:19.
He was a generous, funny and passionate music maker and Cininnnati's leading advocate. And he was a pistol. All of these traits, and more, are captured in the Erich Kunzel Clips from WGUC. Mr. Kunzel died yesterday....these clips are perfect for your EK tributes and Telarc recordings.
"Always a Cheerleader," "Making Shows Better" and "Often Asked Question" and "Winding Down Career are highly recommended.

When the workers of the world united....and sang about it. (deleted)
A pleasing, breezy review of the songs written in the 30s and 40s when the workers of the world united....and sang about it.
"Popular Songs on the Picket Lines" is a musical avenue that offers your listeners a different perspective on Labor Day.
This 59:00 show could serve as an addition, and possible contrast, to the more labor intensive employment and economic programming you've already scheduled for this Labor day.
With all of the employment and economic stories that were heard on your station during this past season of economic and employment uncertainty, "Popular Songs on the Picket Lines" offers both historical perspective and a diversion that is entertaining, thoughtful and substantial.
Nice mix, and choice of songs, that are evenly sad, sentimental and satirical, including Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Ethel Waters, Bing Crosby and two stark tunes from "The Cradle Will Rock" (Mark Bliztein).
Music content is Jazz and show tune-laced song and dance from the 30s and 40s, but the subject matter and timeliness makes the program worthy of consideration on a variety of formats.
As you look for end of summer programming, or new ways to plant seeds in your listeners hearts and souls as fundraising season returns in September and October, I wanted to get in one additional recommendation about the mindblowing six-part series, The Nerve - Music and the Human Experience, from the CBC.
The series investigates the "how and why of music" in fresh, new ways and means. To get all that this program offers requires a mostly "sit down and give all your attention to the radio" commitment. And it's a sit down experience you can, without hesitation, tell your listeners is well worth their time and attention.
Even if you don't get all of the information and understanding of the music-brain-body interaction, the mix of voices, information, music and radio craft is so pleasing to the ear. Still, your listeners will still walk away with plenty.
(Repeating each show in the series is worth considering.)
Some people (and radio producers) know how to make far away worlds -- the mystery of science, music, the cochlea, spinal column, and the cerebral cortex -- accessible, beautiful, fun, interesting and entertaining.
The presenters and producers of this series are those people.
Highly recommended.
(More detailed reviews of Programs 1 and 3 in the series are included in the "Music Station Picks for August" Playlist.)

The Caruso Story Makes Beautiful Music and Story Telling (deleted)
A wonderful story and celebration of the likely greatest tenor of all times. Behind the other worldly singing, fame and glory, are stories of celebrity trappings, the challenge to remain musically fit and the tortuous struggle to keep his reputation up to the public expectations. The powerful quotes from Caruso's writings help tell those stories of the unhappy "supernatural being" as does Producer and Host Rick Fulker. Here's a fantastic summation of Enrico Caruso that will inspire ongoing enjoyment and investigation.
