This piece blew my head off! I work in a school so I absolutely laughed like a loon! I liked it so much that I went back and re-read the reviewing guidelines and Reviewing Terms to make sure that I can say the two words that best sum up the piece and immediately came to mind.
How un-politically correct is this in the age of school shootings? Well, let's just say his students are described as "12 year old sociopaths" who ask to play with live ammo. Yeah, definitely worth a listen if you like mildly conservative, interestingly derranged poetry.
Paul McDonald's piece is an "ear-catcher." People came in from other rooms to catch what I was listening to. Very brief, hard-hitting and funny, this piece captures well the experience of working with adolescents in a school setting. Having experienced similar situations, the percussion beats add to the piece because that's pretty much what one feels like during a day of substitute teaching. Since many public radio listeners are involved in the educational process in some way, this piece should fit in well after the broadcasting of serious educational pieces.
